Sex and Mental Well-being

by The Mind Faculty

Sex is an important part of our mental well-being, and it can also be an indicator of our mental health. In order to have a fulfilling sexual experience, we need to be able to access feelings of safety, joy and excitement.

Most people may experience sexual difficulties at some point in their lives. This can be due to stress, lifestyle changes, relationship issues or mental health issues such as depression and anxiety.

This can manifest as:

  • A lack of sexual desires or differences in sexual desire in a relationship.

  • A lack of interest or infrequent sex.

  • Problems getting or maintaining erections.

  • Pain during sex.

  • Penetration difficulties (vaginismus).

  • Inability to reach orgasm.

  • Sex or pornography addiction.

Due to the taboo nature of sex, many people find it difficult to talk about it. This can lead to frustration and distress, as well as low self-esteem and relationship difficulties.

Sex Therapy

Issues with your sexual health are not a performance problem. They are a result of psychological, physical and relationship factors that can cause great emotional suffering and distress.

Sex therapy is a type of talk therapy that helps you to communicate openly and honestly about your sexual difficulties so that you can have a fulfilling sexual relationship. You'll explore your relationship with sex and intimacy, as well as learn new tools for joy, safety and connection.

The Mind Faculty is a premium mental health clinic in Solaris Mont Kiara. We offer psychiatric, psychological and counselling services. We offer sex therapy, which is facilitated by our relationship counsellor Sharan Kaur. She helps you to explore sex in a safe and respectful way.
